When most people think of Nottingham, Robin Hood comes to mind. For those of us in pharmacy, it’s something else entirely. It’s the birthplace of pharmacy as we know it in the UK.
I recently visited Boots headquarters as part of our ongoing collaboration with them. Walking through their museum-like exhibits, I was struck by the story of Jesse Boot — whose father, John Boot, founded a small herbal medicine shop — and how Jesse transformed healthcare by making medicines more accessible and affordable for the general public. It was a powerful reminder that pharmacy has always been about improving access and serving communities.
The HQ itself has a real “wow factor” — vast, striking, and rich with heritage that makes you pause and reflect. Each exhibit tells a story of vision and evolution, showing how innovation has shaped pharmacy over the years. It’s inspiring to see how one family business could have such a lasting influence on healthcare in the UK.
At Cegedim Rx, we share that same commitment to supporting pharmacies, whether large or small, in delivering care and evolving to meet patient needs. Today, that innovation isn’t just about scale, it’s about impact in every community, from national chains to independent pharmacies, which remain at the heart of local healthcare.
Looking ahead, the NHS Long Term Plan and Pharmacy First initiatives underscore how central community pharmacies are to accessible, proactive care. From supporting long-term conditions to advising on minor ailments, pharmacies play a vital role in delivering care with expertise, dedication, and a passion that often goes far beyond standard opening hours.
Visiting Nottingham was a reminder that pharmacy has a rich past and an exciting future. For me personally, it reinforced why I’m so passionate about this sector. My commitment is to help all pharmacies thrive, embrace innovation, and continue delivering care that truly makes a difference in people’s lives.
Spending the day there left me inspired, energised, and even more determined to support pharmacies in their mission. Because behind every service, every consultation, and every prescription, there’s a human story worth caring for.
